Photographic memories: Swedish winter vs Swedish summer

I've written about this place a few times on this blog: my parents' summer house in northern Sweden.

In summer, it's the place where the kids can play in the sand, splash in the water, dig for worms and head out in the boat to go fishing.

In winter however, it's basically a frozen tundra. When we visited for Christmas 2009, the kids made snow angels in the same spot where we had put the tent up the previous summer. They trudged through meter deep snow where they had chased each other through the grass.

It's still beautiful. Even kind of magical with that winter twilight in the sky: a brief moment of some kind of daylight before it's back to utter midwinter darkness again.

And then it's summer and instead of darkness there are summer nights that don't really get dark at all. And the same place that was covered in ice and snow looks like this:

And the kids run along the beach again.
